Excelling for the 2028 Olympics: Restoring, Not Displacing, LA’s Unsheltered Residents

Los Angeles’ most glaring flaw as host of the 2028 Olympics is the nation’s largest population of unsheltered homeless individuals. If LA fails to make inroads on the problem, 2028 will be a disaster for unhoused people and LA’s reputation. Restoring the lives of unsheltered residents will be an Olympic achievement.

Diesel exhaust is bad for people’s health. It degrades neighborhoods near warehouses and accelerates global warming. Conventional diesel trucks are free riders on the air we share. Diesel fuel provides only 6.5 percent of their propulsive power. The rest comes from the air, which provides 14.5 times more combustion fuel than the petroleum in their tanks.

Exhausting Our Air: Environmental and Human Costs of Diesel Trucks

California’s mandates to replace diesel trucks with zero-emission electric trucks will bring cleaner air and better jobs – if they stay on track. Slow action by electric utilities and fierce opposition by trucking companies are real threats. Displacement of brick-and-mortar retail stores by online retailing and sprawling warehouses has come at the cost of climate change, bad air, low wages.

Demolishing Homes for Air Cargo: San Bernardino Airport Gateway Plan

The Inland Valley Development Agency plans to convert a 678-acre residential and mixed-use area north of San Bernardino International Airport into 9.2 million-square feet of warehouse and industrial space to create “a thriving jobs center.” This gesture at economic development has already been shown to create poverty-level jobs, economic hardship, and precariously housed workers.

Economic Study of the Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO) and the Los Angeles Housing Market

Severe overcrowding in Los Angeles rental housing fell 63 percent from 2000 to 2007, the most recent year for which data is available. Only 9 percent of renters are severely overcrowded, with 1.5 or more occupants per room. The bad news is that 58 percent of renters are rent-burdened, paying 30 percent or more of their income for rent.
